Berlin Marathon Training in Stadtwald Giessen: 11, 10, and 9 Weeks Out

Wow! What a whirlwind three weeks! Beth and James visited us, and we spent that time wisely traveling and trying some of Germany’s and the Czech Republic’s fine beers. Oh, and taking thousands of pictures (Any one want to guess how many pictures Beth and I took combined? A beautiful postcard from Giessen, Germany, is the prize for the winner! Post your guesses in the comments section.) We managed to squeeze in 2 runs a week while they were here, and three runs the week they left.

Yes, that does make me a little nervous! But I still know I can complete the 26.2 miles. I’ve modified my training plan only slightly: down 4 miles in week 8 and down 2 miles in week 7, then I’m totally back on track.

Running-wise, it was a rough three weeks. I think it was a combination of having my routine flip-flopped, eating differently than normal, and drinking more beer than normal (it went from one serving every 7 to 10 days to on serving every 2 to 3 days), and I’m not the only one dealing with food issues. That makes me feel better, knowing that I am not alone.

Berlin Marathon Training in Stadtwald Giessen: 12 Weeks Out [PICTURES!]

This is, hands-down, the best week I’ve had since we moved to Germany: We picked up my best friend, Beth, and her husband James from the Frankfurt airport Wednesday morning. Beth and James also like to run (and do yoga, play soccer, and just generally stay healthy), so every fun after Tuesday’s was a girl/boy runn: Rob and James out-pace us girls, so they would run up ahead. It was nice not to be pushed by someone who is faster than you and who wants to go faster. :)

Tuesday, 1 July 2008

run type: training run
route: started at Seltersweg, out to the 1/2 mile marker in the Stadtwald Giessen and back
feeling: :)
time: 47’10”
distance: 4 miles
pace per mile: 11’48”
additional notes: We took it pretty easy today because our legs were not happy with us after the 12 miles we put them through, so we ended up walking for 4 minutes in the second mile to give our ankles, knees, and hips a little break. It helped a lot.

Thursday, 3 July 2008

run type: pace run
route: started at the beginning of Stadtwald Giessen, out to the Schiffenberg, back to the Main, up to the 1.5-mile marker and back to the beginning
feeling: :)
time: 55’18”
distance: 5 miles
pace per mile: 11’06”
additional notes: This was the best pace run ever! We ran up, up, up to the Schiffenberg castle, which used to be a monastery, took quite a nice long break to drink some beer and take fun pictures (see below), then ran back down.

We see these cool snails on the trail all the time.

This is the Schiffenberg. We live a rather arduous (read: “hilly”)
2 miles from this beautiful old monastery.

Post-run/middle-of-run beer!

Beth and James posing in front of the beautiful view.

Cute, but sweaty, Rob and Linden in front of the view.
