Berlin Marathon Training in Stadtwald Giessen: 8 Weeks Out

What? I’m eight weeks away from the marathon?! Ahh! That’s sorta scary, sorta exciting, and sorta close! But you know the big day is nearing when you receive your race packet in the mail! That’s right, I am officially registered. My starting number is F6001.

In other news, I have a weight loss victory to report! I went down a bra size! Not a cup size, but the number got smaller. Fact you can file and forget: Rita is apparently slightly larger than Lucy. (Yes, I named my boobs after Beatles songs.) Also, I feel like I can buy cute H&M clothes and actually have them fit! Sweet.

additional notes: I think I was kind of dehydrated or something. I got tingly when I stopped to walk (2 min and 1 min) and I got a head ache after about 6 miles.

route: Selterweg to 2-mile marker in Stadtwald Giessen, down to Blue Arrow, out to Other Forest, back to Main, back to 1/2-mile intersection, back to 2-mile marker and then home.

distance: 15 miles
pace per mile: 13’17”
additional notes: Pretty good overall, even though (or because) I walked about 10 – 12 minutes. I’m experimenting with carb shots. In the past, I took a carb shot every 6 miles, but Frayed Laces said she did it every 4 miles on her surprise marathon (I will officially believe I am a Real True Awesome Athlete should I ever switch from a 10-mile race to a full marathon, BTW), so I decided to see how it worked for me. And it was good, especially with fizzy mineral water. The only part that was hard today was my legs. After about 8 miles (not a good sign, since my goal is 26.2), my leg joints–hips, knees, ankles–started complaining.

So what did I do? Walked when I needed to and did not focus on time. Not sure what the deal is, but I thoroghly enjoyed a cold shower stream focused on my legs. Since we don’t have a tub for a delightful ice bath, the focused cold water will have to do. It felt great. Seriously, if you’re a distance runner and haven’t tried an ice bath after a long run, you will love it.

    @kevin: I’m getting there. This time around there are lots more aches and pains, and that’s a little disheartening. So physically, I’m a little nervous, but mentally, I’m rarin’ to go!
