This I Believe Podcasts 6: Decisions, Family, Pride/Religion

Today we hear from students who express beliefs that developed as they became adults and looked back on their lives. The beliefs they speak about better equip them to deal with their lives as adults, for Carolin 2 as she learns to make decisions, for Julia as she realizes the value of family, and for Christoph as he finds the right balance of pride in his life.

The Podcasts

“Decisions At Any Time” by Carolin 2 — Click here to listen.

As Carolin matured, her understanding of and difficulties with decisions developed, and came to realize the importance of decisions and helping others with their decisions.

“True Values Often Lie in Secrecy” by Julia — Click here to listen.

Her mother worked extra hours so that she would take keyboard lessons, and her brother would purposely lose a schoolyard game to save her from the loser’s punishment, but Julia didn’t realize it until she was older. Now she truly appreciates what “family” means and tries to repay those acts of love.

“Warriors in Life” by Christoph — Click here to listen.

The idea of “doing as you would be done by” and the religion of Asatru converged to guide Christoph as he interacts with other people and rises to meet the challenges in his life.

The Podcasts

“A Net That Can Keep You Alive” by Kathrin — Click here to listen.

She was young when it happened, but when Kathrin’s brother was very ill and her godfather and godmother took her into their home, Kathrin learned an important lesson about how “family” is defined.

“All the Things That Could Have Been” by Ricarda Messer —  Click here to listen.

After her parents’ divorce, Ricarda lost faith in others and became very guarded; she didn’t let anyone in. Then a trip to Australia and New Zealand taught her to open up and starting taking risks.

“I Believe in Talking Honestly About Your Feelings” by Flo — Click here to listen.

A heart-to-heart with her mother about the public dangers of alcohol abuse, helped Flo to realize that it is not enough to know WHAT you think about a particular topic, but to explore–no matter how painful the realization might be–WHY you believe what you do.
